    Surgeries and Procedures

    • Does my pet need surgery?         (The following applies only to elective procedures such as spay & neuter and dental procedures. If your pet is undergoing a more urgent surgical procedure, Dr Lortz will discuss any specific instructions directly with you).  Dr Lortz recommends that all pet owners familiarize themselves with the benefits of spay and neuter. These procedures can help prevent a number of very serious diseases in the future. Spay and neuter is also directly associated with preventing behavioral problems such as aggression towards other animals and people, inappropriate urination, and may reduce your pet’s urge to try to escape from the house!

    • Pre-operative instructions:
Please note bloodwork is required for all pets 9 years and older prior to undergoing anesthesia.  Dr. Lortz and Vet wheels staff may give you additional instructions if deemed necessary.

    1. Please feed all pets a small breakfast early on the morning of surgery, and then take the food away by 8am . Please DO NOT take the water away at anytime, and be sure your pet has easy access to fresh water at all times.
    2. Please notify Dr. Lortz or the Vet Wheels Staff immediately about any current OR prior medical problems that you are aware of.
    3. All surgery patients must undergo a thorough physical exam on the day of surgery. Dr. Lortz will discuss the results of the examination, and may make additional recommendations if any medical problems are detected. In some cases, Dr. Lortz may recommend that surgery be postponed until the existing medical problem is treated. Please note pre-surgery bloodwork is required for animals 9 years or older.
    4. A current rabies vaccination is required for surgery. If your pet is up to date on their rabies vaccination,  please bring the actual rabies certificate with you. Please note that the metal rabies tag that may be attached to your pet's collar is not an acceptable form of proof, we can only accept the written and signed rabies certificate. If no rabies certificate is produced, surgery may be postponed until the certificate can be produced unless we have your consent to give the rabies vaccination at the time of surgery.

After your pet is examined and admitted for surgery the staff will as you to make payment and you will be free to go. The Vet Wheels Staff will notify you by text when your pet is ready to be picked up and go home. Please be available and ready to pick up your little buddy when we text that they are ready to be discharged.

When you return to pick up your pet after surgery, the staff will go over any specific post-operative instructions with you along with any medications that have been prescribed. Dr. Lortz and the Staff will discuss some things to watch for that would be out of the ordinary, and you are instructed to call immediately if you notice anything unusual. We will be available the next day if you feel the need to have your pet rechecked after surgery.

You must TEXT us at 7184902412 for all laboratory results within 24-72 hours.
